Why go so frequently? Doesn't Holy Mother Church only mandate that we only have to go once a year? Yes, that's true. But doesn't She also say that we're only obliged to receive communion once a year in the Easter season as well? If the Eucharist really was just a piece of bread, or confession just an obligation to check off the list, then yeah, maybe that would be fine. But the Eucharist IS NOT just a piece of bread. It's God Himself!! And confession is not just a "get out of jail free" card; it's a true encounter with the risen Lord in which He pours out His grace into your soul in a profound and distinct way. And the confessing of venial sins is actually “strongly recommended” by the Church (CCC 1458)
But don't take my word for it, look at what Pope Pius XII (that means 12) wrote in 1943: “As you well know, venerable brethren, it is true that venial sins may be expiated in many ways that are to be highly commended. But to ensure more rapid progress day by day in the path of virtue, we will that the pious practice of frequent confession, which was introduced into the Church by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, should be earnestly advocated. By it genuine self-knowledge is increased, Christian humility grows, bad habits are corrected, spiritual neglect and tepidity are resisted, the conscience is purified, the will strengthened, a salutary self-control is attained, and grace is increased in virtue of the sacrament itself” (Mystici Corporis 88).
Look, if you're scrupulous, thinking everything's a sin when it's not, and you have some warped idea that God is going to smit you for every bad thing you do, then yeah, maybe don't go to confession that frequently and talk to a priest, or read something like this. But for everyone else, take that time to make a good examination of conscience and let the Lord pour out His mercy and grace upon you! Oh, how He longs to forgive and clean you!!
